Butcher is Specialized’s proven tyre for no-compromise enduro, downhill and e-bike use. The improved Butcher features a reshaped tread pattern, delivering 12% more tread-to-trial contact. All Butchers feature Specialized’s slowest rebounding T9 rubber compound, providing the most grip in technical terrain and giving riders the best possible trail feedback – which is crucial, as Butcher is mainly used as a front tyre.
Sizes and weights
The lightest Butcher is Specialized’s 27.5 x 2.4in Grid Trail T9 version at a claimed 1,000g. Add the Grid Gravity level of protection, and the weight increases to 1,260g.
Most Butcher riders will be on 29er wheels, and Specialized offers all the necessary variations. Grid Trail Butchers, with the T9 compound and sized 29 x 2.4in, are 1,048g, while the Grid Gravity casing adds a few grams, taking total tyre weight to 1,307g. For e-bikes, which benefit from the additional air volume of a larger casing, there are the Butcher 29 x 2.6in Grid Trail T9s, at 1,110g, with the Grid Gravity casing versions being more robust at 1,330g.
Riders who want to pair a robust, fast-rolling rear tyre with the updated Butcher are well served by the latest Eliminator. Popular as a rear e-bike tyre, the Eliminator now features squared-off tread blocks to enhance its climbing ability, with more secure traction for riders who confidently use the e-bike mid-drive motor’s peak output when conquering those steep, technical singletrack climbs.
There are two 27.5 diameter Eliminators for riders who prefer the mixed wheel-size enduro, downhill or e-bike configuration. The lightest of these is the 27.5 x 2.4in Grid Trail T9, at 975g. Upgrade to the Grid Gravity casing and the 27.5 x 2.4in Eliminator increases to 1240g in mass, regardless of whether it's in the T7 or T9 rubber compound – of which both are an option.
Want 29er diameter Eliminators? The latest technical updates are available as a 29 x 2.4in Grid Trail T9 (1,004g) or a more robust Grid Gravity T7/9 casing, 1,330g.
With its in-house tyre and rim design resources, Specialized has optimised the latest Butcher and Eliminator tyres to work best with Roval Traverse SL or Traverse HD wheels. What’s the benefit? These Roval wheels feature more forgiving bead profiles and shapes (branded as ‘FlatStop’), and they are less likely to trigger the dreaded pinch flat if you go way off-line and land on that unintended rock or square edge.
Specialized’s latest downhill, enduro and e-bike tyres are priced by casing. All Butchers and Eliminators with the Grid Trail casings are £50, regardless of size, with the tougher Grid Gravity versions retailing at £55.
