The Crankbrothers Stamp 1 Gen 2 pedal comes in two sizes (small and large) to suit different shoe sizes. The plastic-bodied platform is large, slightly concave, and low-profile, thanks to being built around Igus bushes. The pedal is supportive, grippy, and easy to service. With plenty of colour options and a sensible price, it’s hard to look past it for trail and enduro flat pedal duties.

Crankbrothers Stamp 1 Gen 2 pedal – Technical details

Starting with the all-important contact point, the pedal body is made of plastic composite and has a concave shape to increase grip. Crankbrothers is clearly thinking outside the box with the Stamp 1 pedal, as it comes in two sizes. The small pedal fits up to UK 9 (EU44), while people with bigger shoe sizes should choose the large pedal.

The pedal body has a slim profile of 13.5 – 15.5mm, achieved using Igus LL-glide bushes around the axle. These bushings are thinner than the usual sealed cartridge bearings, helping keep the pedal as thin as possible. A rebuild kit, retailing at £25, is available from Crankbrothers. It contains new bushes and seals to keep the pedals running for years to come. The bushes rotate around a chromoly steel axle and are fitted using an 8mm hex key.

Finishing off the pedal are 10 pins located around the perimeter of the pedal body. The pins screw through the pedal body and are intended to stick out each side equally so there is no length adjustment to be had.

They are designed for enduro, street and trail, so if you want some hard-hitting downhill pedals, the aluminium Stamp 7 pedal is worth a look.  

The Stamp 1 Gen 2 pedal is available in small and large sizes with seven colours. They weigh in at a claimed 348g and get a five-year warranty.

Crankbrothers Stamp 1 Gen 2 pedal – Performance

The platform measures 111mm wide and 114mm long which results in a larger than average contact patch. I found the platform to be supportive across the full width of my size-ten feet and although the concave shape is very minimal it did help with pedal grip.

For testing, I used the Fox Union Canvas shoe and the Fizik Gravita Tensor shoe which have quite different tread designs, but both worked impressively well with the Stamp 1 pedal. The pedal pins are particularly long, measuring 5mm, with no way to adjust how much they protrude. This results in excellent pedal grip.

Crankbrothers has designed its shoes and pedals to go hand-in-hand (foot-in-foot) which is called the Match System. With that in mind, there is no doubt pedal grip would be even better if used with a crank bros shoe.

Coming in at 357g (large), thanks to the composite construction, these are around 80-100g lighter than other metal-bodied alternatives.

Although the plastic body can’t put up much of a fight against rock strikes, the pins go through the entire pedal body, so they’re very sturdy compared to other plastic-bodied pedals. I’ve found them to be plenty sturdy enough with no noticeable flex, while the bushes have proved to be reliable and durable. No doubt these bushes will wear, and, when they do, thanks to the simple design, replacing them using the £25 rebuild kit should be a breeze.

Crankbrothers Stamp 1 Gen 2 pedal – Verdict

Retailing at £55, the Stamp 1 Gen 2 pedal is right on the money, however, there are other options worth considering. Coming in marginally cheaper, at £49, the PNW Components Range composite pedal was praised for its supportive platform and great grip – although the platform is slightly smaller than the Stamp 1 pedal, and the pins are easy to damage. The £50 Deity Deftrap flat pedal is another option which has a similar-sized platform. It was praised for having good support and grip, but not all the pins are replaceable.

The Crankbrothers Stamp 1 Gen 2 flat pedal is a solid offering utilising a large platform with plenty of grip and the choice of two sizes. They are exceptionally tough for a plastic-bodied pedal and are thin, thanks to the use of Igus bushes. These are a great buy.
